Certain HLA-DQB1 allele combinations encoding or not encoding aspartate at position 57 in the beta chain were only found in patients. The DRB1*13-DQB1*06 haplotype was also more common in controls than patients. The results suggest HLA polymorphisms influence the occurrence of tuberculosis in these patients.

This study tested 619 patients in Germany for antibodies and RNA of the Borna Disease Virus (BDV) to examine the link between mental disorders and BDV infection. 416 psychiatric patients and 203 healthy controls were tested using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and serum testing. The results found that 40 of the psychiatric patients tested seropositive for BDV antibodies compared to only 3 of the controls. Of those psychiatric patients, 11 had schizophrenia and 7 of those 11 schizophrenic patients tested positive for BDV RNA strands. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of venous thrombosis have identified several new risk factors. The first GWAS identified two novel loci - GPVI and F11. Subsequent studies confirmed these and identified other loci including a region on chromosome 6p24.1. GWAS have also provided insights into other thrombosis-related traits such as shortened activated partial thromboplastin time. This study compared renal allograft survival in patients with acute humoral rejection (AHR) treated with plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin to patients with acute cellular rejection (ACR). The study analyzed 286 kidney transplants performed between 1999-2001. 16 patients were diagnosed with AHR based on biopsy findings. These patients were more likely to be female, black, have received a deceased donor kidney, have a positive panel reactive antibody, and have received induction therapy. Most AHR patients were treated with plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin, while ACR patients received steroids or antilymphocyte therapy. Genomic sequencing revealed that the viruses causing this flare-up were nearly identical to each other and formed a distinct cluster within the Liberian outbreak lineage. A study investigated the presence of the xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) in UK patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), following reports of its detection in US patients. Yeasts such as Candida are common causes of bloodstream infections in ICU patients. Candida infections in the ICU have a high mortality rate of 15-25% and are the 4th most common cause of hospital-acquired bloodstream infections. Diagnosis can be challenging due to low sensitivity of blood cultures, but newer tests such as PCR, antigen detection assays, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry provide more rapid detection of Candida compared to standard culture methods. The presence of risk factors such as abdominal surgery, central venous catheters, antibiotics use, and prolonged ICU stay increase the risk of developing Candida bloodstream infections in critically ill patients.Bio da 9 (ppt)

This research article investigated associations between polymorphisms in the NRAMP1 and VDR genes and susceptibility to tuberculosis infection and disease progression in a Venezuelan population. The results showed that variants in the NRAMP1 3'UTR region were associated with susceptibility to M. tuberculosis infection, as seen in comparisons between tuberculosis-infected and uninfected controls, and with progression to active tuberculosis disease, as shown in comparisons between tuberculosis patients and infected controls. In contrast, no associations were found between variants in the VDR gene and tuberculosis susceptibility. Layrisse + Author Affiliations 1. IVIC, Caracas, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Abstract Tuberculosis (TB), is still a problem of public health in Venezuela. By still unknown reasons only 30% of the individuals exposed are infected, 5% of them develop the illness within the first year of the infection and 95% remain in latency. The susceptibility to TB is multifactorial and genetic factors of the host play an important role. The aim of this study was to investigate the variability of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 genes in patients with clinical diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and healthy individuals exposed to the bacillus. We have examined these polymorphisms in a case-control study of 194 Venezuelan ethnically-mixed adults, including 93 patients with smear positive pulmonary TB (mean of age 37,9 years) and 101 unrelated healthy controls (mean age 41,4 years), selected of the Algodonal Hospital in Caracas. Definition of HLA variants was done using Dynal RELI SSO HLA Typing Kits. Allelic and genotypic frequencies were determined by direct count and the association was established as odd ratios (OR). DRB1*12 and DQB1*0602 frequencies were significantly increased in patients, while HLA- DRB1*03 and HLA-DQB1*0306 were increased in controls. The analysis of HLA-DQB1 alleles that encode or not aspartate at position 57 at the 硫 chain (ASP-硫57) showed the presence of the phenotypes: DQB1*0301-0302 (ASP-硫57/No ASP-硫57), DQB1*0301-0307 (ASP-硫57/No ASP-硫57) and DQB1*0202-0501(No ASP-硫57/ No ASP-硫57) only in patients. The DRB1*13-DQB1*06 haplotype was observed also increased in the controls vs. patients (OR: 0, 26; p: 0.031). The results suggest an influence of HLA polymorphism in the occurrence of TB in our patients.
