  • #2: Hello, I¡¯m Darcy, your new University Instructional Technologist. It¡¯s my pleasure to serve everyone in the Saint Leo family, and especially everyone here at the School of Business. I¡¯ve been a passionate educator since I started teaching language arts and journalism in Central Pennsylvania in 2004. I come to Saint Leo from a very exciting (and very cold) job as the technology director at the Oslo International School in Norway. [I¡¯ll share what little Norwegian I learned: Min tidiNorgevarveldig bra, men jegers? glad for ? v?reivarme Florida. If you didn¡¯t catch much of that, ¡®Varme Florida¡¯ pretty much says it all.]I work at the direction of Claudia Ruiz and the Instructional Technology team in St. Francis, but you can find me here in office 134. Following our faculty survey, we identified some of the key areas for training and improvement, and at this point, I think we can confidently take another step forward in terms of how we¡¯re using the classroom technology. I wanted to give you an idea of how you and I can work together. I can research the right tool for an activity you have in mind. I can help you brainstorm lesson activities that use that tool. The two of us can develop lesson plans, and then I can be there right alongside you, as you execute those activities in your class. Throughout this cycle, you¡¯re invited to be a part of both one-on-one and small group training, and you can take advantage of some new on-demand training resources I¡¯ll be developing. Throughout all of this, my main focus is teaching and learning ¡with technology. As I said earlier, I started in this profession as a language arts teacher, helping kids to use nouns and verbs, two very different tools in our language, to accomplish their goals. And now, I like to think of technology, teaching, and learning as my tools. And I encourage you to think about technology tools as the nouns, but teaching and learning as the verbs.
  • #3: Does anyone know who this is? [answers] Yes, it¡¯s Louis C.K., professional stand-up comedian, and now more famous for his dark, dry comedy series Louie on FX. Louis is known first for his comedy, but is developing an equal passion for writing and directing. In an interview last month with a writer from one of the online magazines owned by The Onion, he was asked about his new curiosity about, not just the creative aspects of his art, but also the business and technical aspects. Louis responded, ¡°Well, it¡¯s all so interesting. [¡] It really is. I love knowing why I was able to sell out in one town, and why I wasn¡¯t in another town. I love knowing what goes into everything¡ªthe economics, the technical aspect, and how to create the ideas in the show. It¡¯s great. If you can have access to all of that, why the [heck] would you not want to know?...¡I just love learning. I think learning is how you live. The verb of my life is learning.¡± I wanted to share that, because it¡¯s a great way to think about one¡¯s career. So once again, my name is Darcy, and I am excited to work with all of you in your teaching and learning using technology. Thanks!
