- 2. Dada began in Zurich, Switzerland in 1916, spreading to Berlin shortly thereafter. The absurdity of Dada activities created a mirror of the absurdity in the world around them. Dada was anti-aesthetic, anti-rational and anti-idealistic. Surrealist works were bound up with the psychoanalytical theories of Sigmund Freud relating to the irrational and instinctual drives of the unconscious.

He is known best as the founder of Surrealism. 19 February 1896 28 September 1966 Breton was a major member of the Dada group and the founder of Surrealism. Breton drafted the Surrealist Manifesto in 1924, deeply affecting the methodology and origins of Abstract Expressionism.
