WHAT IS A POLYMER
 Any chemical entity repeats itself several times  Polymer
 (CH2 - CH2) n : Polyethylene
 (CH - CH2) n : Polypropylene

Thermoplastic (Can be brought to shape), PE, PP, PMMA,
PVC, PS, PET
Thermosetting (cant be brought to shape), MF, UF, PF
CLASSIFICATION AS PER USAGE

General purpose use- High tonnage  Low value materials

 Engineering Polymers
Special Purpose use - low tonnage  high value
Nylon engineering resin, polycarbonate, polysulphones, polyetherketones,
polyether etherketones
 Fibre / Film forming Polymers
Commodity as well as specialized.
PET (film, PSF, PFY) Polyamide, (Nylon 6 and Nylon 6,6)
Globally, 80 to 90% of total polymer consumption is for commodity and fibre/film
forming polymers.
