THE PROBLEM PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL
Introduction
¡°Any new concept ...¡± needs to be created,
protected, prototyped, and tested -- and
that can run from tens-of-thousands of
dollars to a few million dollars using
traditional linear development methods
BEFORE the first product is sold.
People and businesses who are inspired to
make things, will be limited if they don¡¯t have
access, training, or cannot afford the right kind of
educated staffing and support, along with the
best integrated design and 21st Century
fabrication tools.

THE SOLUTION PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL
W a concept!
hat
Making things is core to who we are.
Many people want to make things. What they lack are the
tools, the capital, or the support community to do
it. It¡¯s a serious impediment to innovators.
X-Celerator Labs helps them ¡°just make it.¡±
X-Celerator Labs is based on having access
over ownership. In this new way of looking at
product development, X-Celerator Labs thinks
it¡¯s critical to optimize use of capacity (90% rather
than 8%) -- not maximize control to have ownership!
When you give people access to the right tools,
you build the right atmosphere for
manufacturing growth as well as creativity and innovation.

Editor's Notes
Over the past few years, the U.S. manufacturing sector has added more than 400,000 jobs. As America continues to revitalize manufacturing we need to recognize that growing a vibrant manufacturing sector is central to ensuring that the next generation of products are not only invented here, but manufactured here as well. X-Celerator Labs accelerates this kind of innovation by supporting advanced and industrially-relevant manufacturing with broad applications that bridge the gap between basic research and product development, provide shared assets to help companies ¨C particularly small manufacturers ¨C access cutting-edge capabilities and equipment, and create an unparalleled environment to educate and train workers in advanced manufacturing skills.
Traditional product formulation from basic idea to a formalized idea with drawings typically costs between $27,000 to $53,000. A Patent Search and filing will typically add an additional $795-$12,000, though it can run as high as $530,000. Traditional prototyping can run from $10,000 to well over $100,000. But, another process has recently gone mainstream. It¡¯s called ¡°rapid prototyping,¡± which uses a technology called stereolithography. That, in turn, has led to ¡°Advanced Rapid Manufacturing¡± techniques that represent the next major shift in manufacturing technologies and methods in the 21st Century. This new rapid technology enables you to have plastic or powdered metals prototypes made quickly and directly from computer-aided drawings (CAD) by a large tooling machine, rather than from the traditionally expensive injection molds. Rapid prototypes and advanced rapid manufacturing techniques can cost as little as a few hundred dollars each (depending on complexity), but they're often a bargain when considering the alternatives.
