Assignment 3: Focus Assessment
June 16, 2013
The FOCUS assessment defined me as primarily artistic
and the careers suggested to me are reflective of that. 1.
Actor/Actress: takes on personas of characters reflected in TV or
movies. 2. Cartoonist (Publications): a job drawing animated
characters for publication in newspapers or magazines. 3.
Choreographer: designs original dance routines. 4. Commercial
designer: a job designing product packaging. 5. Composer: creates
music for various types of musical groups.
None of the career choices provided for me are related to
my major. However I agree with the assessment and could see any
one of these careers being enjoyable and fulfilling. I hope to pursue
a career in the mental health field actively working with patients to
improve their psychological wellbeing. This is much more of a
social occupation involving the ability to understand and relate to
others in addition to the skills of active listening and client
management. My current job however is much related to the
artistic field, so I can see why this assessment would place me in
that category. Right now I work as a makeup artist where artistic
skills are highly in demand. I do very much enjoy the creative
aspect of my work; however the industry is difficult to succeed in
even when talent and skills are present. Although psychology is
primarily considered to be a social occupation, while the careers
listed above are primarily considered artistic occupations, there is
at least one major similarity between the two spheres of
occupations. Both require the skill of relating to people and
ensuring client satisfaction. A successful psychologist needs to be
able to connect with patients in order to understand and provide
effective treatment for each patients unique situation. An artist
will likely have clients who may be either individuals or
corporations who come with expectations and a need to be
satisfied.
My major as a student of University Studies integrates
three areas of concentration. Communication studies, Human
Development and Family studies, and Organized Leadership. None
of these areas particularly related to the careers pinpointed by the
FOCUS assessment. However, one could speculate that the study
of communications relates to a career such as acting because
communication studies emphasizes skills such as public speaking
which is necessary for an actor. All three areas are applicable in a
social field such as psychology. Psychologists communicate
actively with patients, while human development can be
considered as a branch of psychology opening doors to careers,
and the ability to make decisions and encourage others that are
taught for leadership are necessary as well for a psychologist.
The FOCUS assessment was not completely helpful to my
future career plans. However I do think the assessment provided
some information on my personality and on other career options
that may be an alternative to what I have been considering. I feel
that the assessment may have been more helpful had I taken it
without a potential career in mind.
