More about us ...
? I?m Francisco Afonso. I’ve always loved cars, and coming into the F1 in schools really
means a lot to me. In the past I’ve practiced competition swimming, and some of my
favorite hobbies are playing virtual games, playing football, and riding bike. Currently I
frequent the 10th grade, of sciences and technologies and I’m looking forward to
become a mechanic engineer. The F1 in Schools has presented me with a chance of
experience the life I want to follow and that is really important to me, I hope to learn a
great deal of certain subjects such as dynamics during this competition.
? My name is Fábio and I like to develop software and fix problems, so as I have some
knowledge about tecnologies and design so I?m responsable to create the team
website?s and also customize the design of the portfolio. I think this project is brilliant
because I love Formula 1 and we can learn a lot about how works F1 car?s.
? My name is Gon?alo, I like to play basketball on my free time. I also like to play table
tennis and ride a bike. I’m the responsable of the advertisement for the team, and
raising funds. I’m really excited on this project, and I hope we succed.
? My name is Rafael. I love cars and I've always been interested in mechanic
engineering. Since I was a litle kid I watched a lot of racing events like “formula 1” and
“nascar”. The fact that I love cars and races took me to practice atlethics. I joined this
project because, like I previous said, I'm a car addicted, and in the future I hope to
become a great mechanic engineer in a racing team.

Here are some logos, while we were
trying to make our actual logo.
Our main idea as we were drawing our
minds, was to include the idea of
racing, shield (has it inspire safety –
according to the word Invictus which
means ‘unconquered’), and also the
fact that we are all from the Invictus
city, Porto in Portugal.

same time we discuss what we
thought it will be the best

The whole concept of the team Invictus came together when one of our team
members invited all the other members to join Formula 1 in schools project by
creating a team.
All of us were extremely excited about the project because we all hope to become
great future engineers. Although some of our initial members gave up of the
competition on its early face.
So, in the end only a few of the original members stayed on the team.
At the beginning there were some disagreements about the team name, some of the
first names were 'Radioactive Buffalos', 'Line of Insanity' among others.
Still, with all that we managed to get through some hard times, by laying plenty of
our time on this project, witch is hard because we are students.
We all hope to win this competition, but more importantly, to be part of it and learn
with others.

We believe that aerodynamics have become key to success in
F1.
According to Nasa (nasa.gov):
“Aerodynamic is the way air moves around things. The rules
of aerodynamics explain how an airplane is able to fly.
Anything that moves through air reacts to aerodynamics. A
rocket blasting off the launch pad and a kite in the sky reacts
to aerodynamics. Aerodynamics even acts on cars, since air
flows around cars.”

Basicamente, o aerofólio é uma sec??o bidimensional
projetada para provocar varia??o na dire??o da
velocidade de um fluido. Tem o objetivo de evitar o
desiquilibrio do carro e também posiveis de acidentes.

The Car

As our project was starting we needed to search for pictures to inspire us in
the making of the car. We started by old F1 in Schools cars but we wanted to
search more and to go beyond those cars. So we searched and studied a lot
of real F1 cars, drag racers and even the highest speed record achiever:
Thrust SSC. In the end of this process we drew our own cars… and this was
the one we chose.
In the begining we had a lot of problems with SolidWorks but after a few tutorials
we were able to start creating the car. As we were a litle bit lost on the program yet,
we downloaded the pre-made version of the race car by SolidWorks itself and after
a few analyses and changes we made our first attempt of a car. In this version we
only attempted to put the car shorter.
After that we thought that the best idea was to make the car from scratch, so we
opened the rules file and we started working. Firstly we made a block corresponding
to the wooden block, already with the middle rail and the space for the CO2 bottle.
We started modeling and in a few hours we had a very rough shaped car, a lot of
pointy edges and unellegant cuts.
Finally after a lot of efforts, we were able to create a very beautiful, elegant and car
looking piece. For us, achieving this level was already very motivating and made us
believe in oursleves even more. Just a few steps for the end we created the spoilers
and tested the car in the wind tunnel. At the first attempt we didn’t get very good
results thanks to the front spoiler, but after a few changes we got really good results.

For the final touches we fixed a problem
with the wheels and prepared the spoiler
so the car could be machined.
When the car’s body was complete we
started to think in the paint job, and in a
sea of ideas we decided that the best idea
was the simpler, a black background and
two orange stripes. This chosen colors
were added to the logo too.
Aerodinamics: Looking to the finished
product we made the car with the less air
resistance we could and with some grip to
the track.

We are six students from secondary school
Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves, a science and
technology class.
We want to present our team - Invictus f1
project, which is being developed by us since
January. The work accomplished so far has
shown great potential which make us confident
about our performance in the national and
international competition.
F1 in schools is a project that challenges
young students to plan and build a car similar
to a race car, using a CAD program,
SolidWorks. The national winners will
participate in a world competition.
Our project has the support of Filomena Costa,
a teacher and CATIM, an enterprise which gives
all sort of explanations, help and resources to
get through the process.
