ReviewPAST TENSE A verb tense used to express an action or a condition that occurred in or during the past Past tense show actions or events at a specific time in the past. The actions or events START or STOP at a specific time in the past.
Review We learned in previous lessonsto change a regular verbs to the past tense we add ed to the end of the verbfor example: Present tense: I play football everyday. Past tense : I play (ed) football yesterday.
NOTE TO REMEMBER : There are no rules that exist to form the past tense for irregular verbs. Irregular verbs dont follow a pattern in the simple past tense like regular verbs dothey are very different. You cant simply add ed to the verb to show action in the past tense. It is necessary to recognize and memorize these verbs .
READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES. Sentences with irregular verbs (present tense) . I run to school. I run in the morning. I run five miles everyday. I runn(ed) to school. (This is incorrect) because run is an irregular verb. Sentences with irregular verbs in the past tense (past tense) I ran to school. I ran in the morning. I ran five miles yesterday. Notice: No ed was put at the end of the verb.
The following 10 examples are irregular verbs : Simple form Past form Past participle is/be was/were been
Practice He is in London today . He was in London yesterday . He has been in London for a week .

Practice He eats hot dogs everyday for lunch. He ate hot dogs yesterday for lunch. He has eaten hot dogs all week for lunch.

Practice Andrew gets a large check every month . Andrew got a large check last month . Andrew has gotten a large check every month this year.
go went gone Go went gone
Practice Frank goes to Japan every summer. Frank went to Japan last summer . Frank has gone to Japan the last 10 summers .
know knew known
Practice I know the answers on todays test. I knew the answers on todays test . I have known the answers to todays test for a week.
ring rang rung
Practice Johns phone rings a lot. Johns phone rang every hour . Johns phone has rung for the past 24 hours .
throw threw thrown
Practice Inoue throws his opponents. Inoue threw his opponents in todays match . Inoue has thrown his opponent every match this tournament .
win won won
Practice Iowa wins 90% of their dual meet matches. Iowa won 90% of their dual meet matches last season. Iowa has won 90% of their dual meet matches for the last 25 years .
teach taught taught
Practice Mr. Barbrie teaches 6 th grade Reading. Mr. Barbrie taught 6 th grade Reading last year . Mr. Barbrie has taught 6 th grade Reading for 5 years.
