God Justifies
Isaiah 53:1-12
How do you celebrate the Sacrifices others have made for you?
How does their sacrifice impact your life today?
Session
God Justifies
Isaiah 53:1-12
Purpose:
Students will understand that the true God is forgiving. He justifies
believers by taking their sin on Himself.
Memory Verse
Isaiah 53:5
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was
bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement of our
peace was upon Him, And with His stripes we are
healed.
Context
The previous servant songs build to the depiction in Chapter 53. Some songs speak of the nation of Israel
while other speak of the prophet Isaiah. It becomes increasingly clear that nation, nor the prophet Isaiah
could fulfill the role of the servant in Chapter 53. Chapter 51 and 52 states that after Jerusalem has drunk
from the cup of the wrath of god they would experience hope.
The Punishment of the Lord was:
Temporary. It would come to an end,
It was a means of correction,
To produce a change in behavior and restore relationship
In the end God would lead His people out of captivity.
The Lord would not abandon His people.
God made a way for the exile to never happen again because:
The servant servants work would have eternal implications
The servant will restore the children of the barren woman,
The wall of the city would have jewels,
There would be perfect peace for Gods people,
The citizen could rejoice because of the servant.

DESPISED
(ISA. 53:1-3)
How the people
saw the suffering
Messiah
SUBSTITUTE
(ISA. 53:4-6)
God sent Jesus to
bear our sin to
deliver us from
the consequences
of sin.
WILLING
(ISA. 53:7-9)
The servant was
wiling to be
sacrificed for
others.
SACRIFICED
(ISA . 53:10-12)
The servant
(Jesus) was a
sacrificial
offering for our
sin.
DESPISED (ISA. 53:1-3)
1 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
What is Hope?
Define Despised
Feel contempt or a deep repugnance for:
The Servants Plight
All of the sorrows of body and soul were known unto him.
Because there was nothing beautiful or charismatic about Him He was rejected.
( Men values physical beauty and charisma more than God does).
Jesus is acquainted with all of our grief and pain.
Despised and rejected
Have you ever felt the sting of rejection or
underserved hatred?
How did it make you feel and how did you
react to it?
SUBSTITUTE (ISA. 53:4-6)
4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and
afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for
our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our
own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
What does it mean to be a
Substitute
A person or thing acting or serving in place of another:
WILLING (ISA. 53:7-9)
7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led
like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he
did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression[a] and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his
generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my
people he was punished.[b]
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Mark 15:2-5 Jesus did not try to defend Himself.
John 10:18 Jesus willingly laid down His life.
John 19:11 Jesus was in total control of the crucifixion.
John 19:30 Jesus was even in control of when he would die.
Jesus was silent , not helpless
SACRIFICED (ISA . 53:10-12)
10 Yet it was the Lords will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord
makes[a] his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the
will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life[b] and be satisfied[c]; by his
knowledge[d] my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[e] and he will divide the spoils
with the strong,[f] because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the
transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
The blessing of the Servant (Jesus) Sacrifice
The Servant (Jesus) was not just like a guilt offering He was the guilt offering
The one sacrificed was not the one guilty but paid for the guilt of the whole of
humanity.
Those who repent and accept the sacrifice of the Servant (Jesus), on their behalf
becomes the offspring of the Servant (Jesus).
His sacrifice would make it possible for the guilty to escape punishment and be
restored to God.
The ones who are saved by the Servants sacrifice are those who enter a relationship
with Him.
How does what the Servant (Jesus) did for you strengthen your
commitment to Him?
Write a Prayer of Thanksgiving for His awesome gift.
In your conversations this week, inject the sacrifice that God made in
Christ to someone who might not know Him.
