Islamic art began in the 7th century with the founding of Islam. It uses detailed symmetrical shapes and patterns that are often balanced and harmonious. Tessellations are a type of Islamic art that uses repeating geometric shapes fit together without gaps. Maurits Escher was famous for his tessellation artworks that involved both art and mathematics. While Mohamed Al Kabar in the 17th century is often credited as the pioneer of Islamic art styles, many later artists continued developing the tradition.
