Alonso Berruguete (c. 1488 1561) was a highly influential Spanish sculptor of the Renaissance period. He was considered the most important sculptor of the Spanish Renaissance, known for his emotive religious sculptures depicting ecstasy or torment. Berruguete studied art under his father initially, then traveled to Italy to further his study under Michelangelo. When he returned to Spain, he was appointed court painter and sculptor to King Charles V, after which he focused primarily on sculpture.
