James Marshall was a children's author and illustrator born in 1942 in Texas. He grew up on a family farm and later studied music before turning to writing and illustrating children's books after discovering his passion for it in 1971. Some of his most famous works included the George and Martha series about two hippos, as well as Miss Nelson is Missing. Marshall wrote with simplicity but elegance, using his stories to impart lessons to children before dying of brain cancer in 1992.

Grew up on family farm
Father- worked on railroad, band member in the 30s
Mother sang in local church choir
Moved to Beaumont, TX when he was younger and hated it
Learned to play the viola to get him out of Beaumont
Scholarship to New England Conservatory of Music in
Boston, Massachusetts
Injured his hand and ended his music career

Returned to Texas and attended San Antonio College
transferred to Southern Connecticut State University and
graduated with degrees in French and History
Discovered his vocation in 1971 on a summer afternoon
while his mom watched Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf

Wasnt highly publicized, which prevented him from getting
a lot of recognition
Continued writing and illustrating until he died on October
13,1992 from a brain tumor
