The Earth's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%), which is quite different from what might be expected given the most common elements in the universe. The atmosphere also contains small amounts of argon, carbon dioxide, and other gases including helium, neon, krypton, hydrogen, and xenon. Ozone and methane are also present in trace amounts.
