This document provides information about Syracuse University's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) group and two of their projects helping artisans in Guatemala. SIFE applies expertise in areas like financial literacy and entrepreneurship to community projects. SU-SIFE has over 70 active members working on ongoing projects. One project helps Mayan backstrap weavers in Guatemala open new markets by developing products like laptop covers and jewelry. Another project, Threads of Hope, plans to build a thread store in Guatemala to provide supplies and business training to over 900 local weavers. The store aims to generate sustainable income and keep children in school.

Object oriented programming allows classes to inherit commonly used state and behavior from other classes through inheritance. Inheritance establishes a parent-child relationship between classes where the child inherits members from the parent. Java uses the keyword "extends" for inheritance and does not support multiple inheritance. Abstract classes and interfaces are designed to be inherited only, with abstract classes able to contain implemented methods and interfaces consisting solely of abstract methods that must be implemented in subclasses. Nested, inner, and anonymous classes can be defined within other classes, with inner classes having access to enclosing class members and anonymous classes declared without a name at instantiation.

The Battle at Louisburg was a conflict between the French and British over power and land in Nova Scotia and the Ohio River Valley from 1754 to 1761. The French started it by refusing to give up control of the strategic fortress at Louisburg, which was the gateway to the St. Lawrence River. After James Wolfe took command of the British forces, they were able to conquer Louisburg from the French in July 1761, gaining control of the area. The British victory resulted in their gaining control of the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and weakening French power in North America.

Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moore’s Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.
