Puerto Rico was of strategic interest to the United States during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Leaders Julio J. Henna and Roberto H. Todd corresponded with President McKinley to include Puerto Rico in the U.S. intervention in Cuba. The U.S. sought to take control of Puerto Rico before the war ended as most of the population viewed U.S. soldiers as liberating heroes, allowing the U.S. to gain control over the island.
