You will consider questions like these and more in this discussion.First, review the case, Corneas in the Congo, in the following excerpt from, The Ethics of Leadership (Ciulla, 2003, p. 14):You are the head of a small aid agency in the Congo. The mission of your agency is to provide health services for refugees who have fled the various civil wars in the region. In recent years you have worked with a number of nongovernmental organization agencies, such as C.A.R.E., Doctors Without Borders, and the Christian Childrens Fund. Your agency focuses on giving intensive help to small communities. You are now working in a camp of fifty people. Because of a peculiar parasite in the water that destroys the cornea of the eye, ten people in the camp have gone blind; half of them are children. Except for their inability to see, their health is reasonably good, given the conditions of the camp.You contact Doctors Without Borders and they tell you that they will have two ophthalmologists in the area next week, but that the only thing they can do for the people who have gone blind is to give them cornea transplants. From the everyday to the futuristic, our abilities as humans (and machines) evolve throughout our lifetimes. We are part of a vast, influential range of abilities, both cognitive and physical, that are constantly in flux and influencing one another. This spectrum of ability is a constant reverberating tide that affects everyone, and moves culture.
There are cultural forces radiating across the spectrum of ability in a number of mega trends we follow here at sparks & honey, such as unapologetic, frictionless and AI ethics. These trends are evident in our relationships with one another and with technology, in fashion and design, our workplaces, and in the streets we walk, run or drive through. In this report, we examine the pervading tide of culture through the lens of ability, affecting all of us.
Were looking toward a futureevident already in our lives todaywhere ability can be enhanced, morphed, designed and modular. For some, this will increasingly be a necessity, and for others, a luxury. For some time, weve been enhancing our abilities: with pacemakers, tech tattoos for diabetics that measures glucose levels, or bionic limbs.
As we infuse our lives with technology and look to robots for companionship, entertainment and assistance, ability becomes a question of human and civil rights. And maybe even, robot rights.

For this report, sparks & honey conducted primary research and interviewed experts in the field of ability, including thought leaders from our Influencer Advisory Board (IAB). We surveyed 1,009 people in the US, aged 18 to 65, to engage their perceptions on evolving technologies. There are cultural forces radiating across the spectrum of ability in a number of mega trends we follow here at sparks & honey, such as unapologetic, frictionless and AI ethics. These trends are evident in our relationships with one another and with technology, in fashion and design, our workplaces, and in the streets we walk, run or drive through. In this report, we examine the pervading tide of culture through the lens of ability, affecting all of us.

Hypertension is described as essential (primary, idiopathic) or secondary to other diseases.
Irrespective of the cause, hypertension commonly affects the kidneys.
Essential hypertension
1. A condition of persistently elevated blood pressure without a known secondary cause, often associated with genetic predisposition and lifestyle factors.
Benign (chronic) hypertension
1. The rise in blood pressure is usually slight to moderate and continues to rise slowly over many years.
2. Sometimes complications, such as heart failure, cerebrovascular accident or myocardial infarction are the first indication of hypertension, but often the condition is symptomless and is only discovered during a routine examination.
Malignant (accelerated) hypertension
1. This is a rapid and aggressive acceleration of hypertensive disease.
2. Diastolic pressure in excess of 120 mmHg is common.
3. The effects are serious and quickly become apparent, e.g. haemorrhages into the retina, papilloedema (oedema around the optic disc), encephalopathy (cerebral oedema) and progressive renal disease, leading to cardiac failure.
Secondary hypertension
Hypertension resulting from other diseases accounts for 5% of all cases.
I. Kidney disease
Raised blood pressure is a complication of many kidney diseases. In kidney disease, there is salt and water retention, sometimes with excessive renin activity.
II. Endocrine disorders
a) Adrenal cortex
Secretion of excess aldosterone and cortisol stimulates the retention of excess sodium and water by the kidneys, raising the blood volume and pressure.
b) Adrenal medulla
Secretion of excess adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine) raises blood pressure, e.g. phaeochromocytoma .
III. Stricture of the aorta
Hypertension develops in branching arteries proximal to the site of a stricture, e.g congenital
coarctation.
IV. Drug treatment
Hypertension may be a side-effect of some drugs, e.g. corticosteroids and oral contraceptives.
Effects and complications of hypertension
The effects of long-standing and progressively rising blood pressure are serious.
Hypertension predisposes to atherosclerosis and has specific effects on particular organs.
