JOSE MARIA
HINOJOSA
EL TEMPRANILLO
WHO WAS HE?
The king of Sierrra Morena, was born in Jauja
(Córdoba) on June 24, 1805, and very young he
enrolled in the proper work of banditry leaving
his town to go to the Sierras Gaditanas; probably
to the towns of El Gastor or Torre Alháquime;
under the captaincy of Francisco el de la Torre,
brother of his wife Jerónima Francés.
Jose Maria had black hair, blue eyes, big mouth,
beautiful teeth and small hands. He wore a fine
shirt, a velvet jacket with silver buttons and
leather leggings, always riding a bay horse.
WHY WAS HE FAMOUS?
The nickname of "Tempranillo", referred to the precocity in his
advent to the punishable race of banditry, belonging in these
early years to the gangs of "The Seven Children of Ecija" and
Don Miguelito Caparrota. José María will soon become
famous throughout Andalusia as a model of brave, intelligent,
attractive and generous bandit. He always escaped justice by
taking advantage of his outstanding knowledge of the land,
when he needed a person for his crew, he had more than
forty people to choose, and dominated all roads in the South
and even service post office, receiving one ounce of gold for
each vehicle that was allowed to pass freely.
