This document provides a socio-historical perspective on the French language by outlining its origins and development over time. It discusses how French evolved from Latin after the Roman conquest of Gaul in the 1st century AD. The earliest written record of French was the Strasburg Oaths of 842, which showed the language simplifying and distinguishing itself from Latin. The development of French literature and efforts to establish French as a language of prestige, such as by the Pl辿iade group in the 16th century, helped further standardize the language. Key events like the founding of the Acad辿mie fran巽aise in 1635 also contributed to defining and codifying modern French.
