Kalgoorlie was founded during the 1893 gold rush when gold was discovered by Paddy Hannan. It quickly became one of the largest gold rushes in Australia, with over 700 men arriving within days to mine the deep underground gold reefs. To support the mining, a 500km pipeline was built to supply water to the desert town. Today, Kalgoorlie remains a bustling mining town, home to Australia's largest gold pit, the Super Pit, which produces 850,000 ounces of gold per year by mining what was originally 10 separate mines.
