We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten years. Technologies like HTML, XML, and XAML/MXML are evolving. While a few social media platforms see limited global reach and engagement currently, their impact is growing through network effects as links and connections increase over time.
JustGiving research @ IoF Insights Annual Conference 2009Jonathan Waddingham

Jonathan Waddingham from JustGiving presented research on online giving trends and demographics based on a survey of 2,820 online donors. Some key findings included that 25% of online donation revenue comes from donors over 45 who give more than ?50, and 33% comes from donors over 55. Different age groups tend to use different tools, with older donors more likely to use email and younger donors more active on social media like Facebook and Twitter. The document discusses a survey of local councils in the UK that examined their use of social media and online communications tools. The survey found that while social networking and podcasting were not widely used at the time by councils, many planned to adopt these tools in the near future. It also identified some barriers to adoption, such as lack of awareness, personal use, IT policies and cultural issues within organizations. The document advocates that councils and organizations learn about and embrace social media tools to better engage with residents.
Mobile learning in formal education or: How to train a trojan horseBenjamin J?rissen
?
Dr. Benjamin J?rissen gave a presentation on how new digital and networked media challenge the traditional linear organization of learning in schools. He argued that schools are based on a "typographic educational culture" that values linear structures to reduce complexity, but new media enable asynchronous, non-linear learning across unified spaces. While schools try to control media and learning, new technologies allow for open networks and boundaries without control. Rather than trying to train this "trojan horse", schools will need to learn how to ride it and cultivate learning in new, non-linear ways.
