Tony Squire has been mentoring middle school students through Virginia Heroes, a nonprofit founded by Arthur Ash, Jr. in 1991 to provide role models for Richmond Public Schools students, for 25 years. The first group Squires invited to the prestigious ABCD Camp included six players, five of whom made the All-Star Game. The Richard Bland College men's basketball team won the NJCAA Division II national championship with a 64-53 victory over John Wood Community College. Two 7th grade basketball players, Brandon Jenkins and Elijah Seward, led their middle school teams to championships this season. Coach Brooks described Jenkins as an excellent three-point shooter with high basketball IQ who averaged 10 points and 7 assists per game, while Seward is an athletic player who can score inside and out and plays with a high motor. Founder Tony Squire was on hand to witness the great achievement. Proud father Chris Johnson, whose oldest son Kaleb committed to Georgetown last week was nearly speechless but added, Its been a crazy week and half but I am just proud. I am at a loss for words. All the work Keldon has put in this summer and in the classroom has really paid off and I am so happy for him. It would be all for nothing if he wasnt such a good student. That makes me just as proud. The Squires family is proud of Keldon as well, as he exemplifies the definition of a true Student- Athlete!
