Մերկասերմերը բազմանում են սերմերով ,
որոնք առաջանում են կոներում և մերկ
վիճակում գտնվում են կոների թեփուկների
արանքում ։ Գարնանը սոճու նույն բույսի
ճյուղերի վրա առաջանում են
կանաչադեղնավուն արական կոներ և
կարմրավուն իգական կոներ ։



Գարնանը փոշեհատիկները քամու միջոցով արական
կոներից տեղափոխվում են իգական կոնի
սերմնբողբոջների վրա և տեղի է ունենում փոշոտոմ ։
Փոշեհատիկը ` փոշեմուտքով թափանցում է
սերմնաբոզբոջ : Այնուհետև իգական կոների
թեփուկները խեժով սոսնձվում , կպչում են և ամուր
փակվում : Ձվաբջջի հասունացման պահին
փոշեհատիկը ծլում է , փոշեխողովակով երկու
սպերմանները հասնում են սերմնաբողբոջում գտնվող
արքեգոնիումին : Նրանցից մեկը միանում է ձվաբջջին
, տեղի է ունենում բեղմնավորում ` առաջանում է
զիգոտ։



Զիգոտից առաջանում է սաղմը , իսկ
սերմնաբողբոջից ` սերմը : Սերմերը կոների
թեփուկների վրա դասավորված են զույգզույգ , բաց վիճակում ` մերկ , որի
պատճառով բոլոր փշատերևները կոչվում են
մերկասերմեր ։ Իգական կոները
աստիճանաբար են աճում ։ Սկզբում նրանք
կանաչավուն են , իսկ երբ սերմերը
հասունանում են , փայտանում են ու
դառնում դարչնագույն ։



Սոճու սերմերը հասունանում են փոշոտումից
և բեղմնավորումից մեկ ու կես տարի հետո ,
իսկ կոներից թափվում են երկու տարի հետո։
Սերմը կազմված է սաղմից , էնդոսպերմից և
սերմնամաշկից ։ Սերմերն ունեն
թաղանթաթևեր , որոնց օգնությամբ քամու
միջոցով թռչում են ու տարածվում։
Նպաստավոր պայմաններում սերմերը ծլում
են և առաջացնում են նոր բույս ։
