TEASER TRAILER TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
NERVE
MISE EN SCENE
From this trailer we can tell the storyline. It is about a game that people can either be "watchers" or "players", if you watch,
you watch the players who are the ones doing the dares that the watchers tell them to do. And the more dares you do the
more points and viewers you get. In the end there is a battle between the two people who have the most viewers and
points. You will get "kicked off" the game if you do not complete the dare after you have been given it. You can tell that it is
a movie that takes place in a modern world where there is new technology being developed. This is because the game
takes place online, and it is mostly young people who are either playing or watching. The main characters are, a girl who
plays the game because people think that she is "boring", and then the other main character is a male, who is someone
that the girl meets and falls in love with whilst playing the game.
Most of the lighting that is used is high key lighting, this is
because it is an action/crime movie and by using high key
lighting it highlights the main action that is on the screen. The
film consists of people doing dares, and the majority of the film
takes place at night time, the high key lighting is mostly focused
on the main characters as they are the ones who are doing the
dares.
EDITING
• The editing is mostly fast paces, this is because the genre of the film is action/crime. The editing keeps
the audience on the edge of their seats and it creates an atmosphere of mystery.
CAMERAWORK
• At the beginning of the teaser, there the camera zooms
into the laptop screen, because this is done at fast pace,
it suggest that the film is going to be intense and fast
paces. A digital voice then points out how the game
works, and what has to be done in order to win. The
digital voice is also known as the "narrative voice/voice
over", this adds to the mysterious atmosphere of the
trailer, because not everything is clear, for example the
audience aren't aware of how dangerous the game
actually is. Throughout the rest of the trailer, the voice
becomes faster and louder and it constantly repeats
"Are you a watcher or a player"? Repetition is used to
emphasis something, therefore this voice repeating the
same question over and over, implies that you are in a
way forced to play the game. You are also persuaded by
your mind, to play the game.
CAMERAWORK
• The trailer then ends with the main male and female
character standing opposite each other. The two
characters are inside of a stadium surrounded with
people who are the "watchers". The digitalised voice
then says "Players show us your weapons". A medium
shot of the female antagonist is then shown, where she
then pulls out a gun and really points it toward the
audience. As the audience we conclude that she is
pointing the gun towards the other antagonist who she
has fallen in love with, we think this because her facial
expression is as if she is scared and frightened. The
trailer the ends with a screen showing the release date
and the title of the film which is "Nerve". This trailer is
left on a cliff hanger, as the audience we were able to
grasp the basic outline of the storyline, and the ending
has been left on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience
wanting to know who gets shot in the end of the
"game".
SOUND
• The sound that is used in this trailer, is mostly non diegetic, this is
because there is a digitalised voice that the audience can here but
the character on screen can't. There are also sound effects that are
used throughout the trailer, this helps to set the scene for the
audience, for example overtime a new dare is given the audience
can here a notification noise, this is an example of diegetic sound
because the characters on screen can also here the notification
sound as well. This noise is also indicates to the audience that you
can't leave the game, the repetition of the noise also puts emphasis
on each of the dares that are given to the characters. Another
example of diegetic sound in the trailer, is the train horn when the
male antagonist is under the trail. Throughout the trailer, the
soundtrack matches what is on screen, for example when the
someone says "Someone died in Seattle playing the game", the
soundtrack slowed down. Another example of this is when the two
characters were on the motorbike, the sound track becomes more
upbeat, as the person who is steering the motorbike, is
blindfolded.
Key Assessment
ANALYSIS OF THE MICRO FEATURES (MISE EN SCENE AND CAMERAWORK) AND
HOW THEY CREATE MEANING IN TERMS OF THE MACRO FEATURES (GENRE,
NARRATIVE, REPRESENTATION AND AUDIENCE).
• In the poster there is close up of the two characters,
their facial expressions are serious. They are put on
the poster because it gives the audience a hint about
who is in the film. This also appeals to the target
audience, for example the fans of Emma Roberts and
Dave Franco will go and watch the film because they
are both in it. The colours are pinks/purples and
green/blues which indicates that the film is based
around computers. The colours also help to indicate
the genre of the film which is crime (hacking). The
setting of the film is also established because you can
see the background of the poster, and you can see
that it is in a street and somewhere where there must
be a lot of technology.
ADD AN OVERALL COMMENT ABOUT HOW YOU THINK THE MARKETING TEAM
BEHIND THE POSTER ARE TRYING TO ATTRACT AN AUDIENCE (USP). DOES
THIS WORK WITH THE TEASER TRAILER?
Target audience:
• Romance – the storyline includes the two main
characters falling in love, so any person that likes
the genre of romance, they will watch this film.
• Action - the dares that are given to the players,
are filled with action, therefore those who like to
watch action movies/films are the ones that are
the target audience of this film.
• Crime/hacking – the film is based on a lot of
crimes,
• Dave Franco fans
• Emma Roberts fans
FINALLY, SUM UP WITH COMMENTS ON HOW THIS MIGHT BE USEFUL
FOR YOUR OWN PRODUCTION PLANNING – WHAT HAVE YOU TAKEN
FROM THIS? WHAT ELEMENTS COULD YOU BORROW?
