This document describes five types of forces: compression, which tries to squash an object together; traction, which pulls or stretches an object apart; bending, which tries to make an object bend; torsion, which may cause an object to twist; and shear or cutting forces, which are opposing and very close together. Examples of each type of force are provided, such as compression in the legs of a chair or bending in the shelves of a bookcase.
