3. 1. FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION
Based on the functions that they
play, there are four kinds of
sentences. These are:
Declarative
Interrogative
Imperative
Exclamatory
4. 1.1. Declarative Sentences
It is a statement.
It can have affirmative or negative
form.
Affirmative
E.g. She is writing a letter for her
institution.
Negative
E.g. He didnt finish his assignment.
5. 1.2. INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES
It is a question.
It can have affirmative or negative
form.
Affirmative
E.g. Have you attended the
meeting?
Negative
E.g. Arent they disturbing the
group?
8. 2. STRUCTURAL CLASSIFICATION
Based on the grammatical
structure of sentences, there are
four sentences.
The number of independent and
dependent clauses in the
sentence determine its kind.
10. 2.1. SIMPLE SENTENCE
A simple sentence has only one
independent clause.
It may have compound subject or
verb.
E.g. We learn English every day.
Alex and Sara missed their flights.
I work the whole day and study at
night.
11. 2.2. COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence has two
independent clauses joined by
coordinating conjunctions.
E.g. He is a lawyer and his wife is
an archeologist.
12. 2.3. COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence has one
independent clause joined with
one or more dependent clauses
with a conjunction.
E.g. Although she is very sick, she
comes to take the exam.
13. 2.4. COMPOUND-COMPLEX
SENTENCE
A compound-complex sentence
has two independent clauses
joined with one or more
dependent clauses.
E.g. She doesnt like eating
pumpkin because it aggravates her
health condition, so she doesnt buy
it at all.
