Ladakh marathon itinerary 9N/10D
Ladakh is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the worlds
mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya and the
Karakoram, it is a high-altitude desert located at the western edge
of the Tibetan plateau. Its awe-inspiring landscape has been
modified and sculpted into its spectacular shape by wind and
water over the millennia. The moon-like scenery is extraordinary:
stark and barren but interspersed with isolated settlements of
green oases full of swaying poplar trees, apricot orchards and
cultivated farmland.
Despite the rugged terrain and high altitude, the people of Ladakh
exhibit a natural joie de vivre and their customs and lifestyle are a
continuum from the past; these friendly and gentle people will all
contribute to make your visit to this stunning area both fascinating
and memorable. The vibrancy and colour of their cultural
traditions can be seen in the many local festivals that take place all
through the summer. Whatever you do here you can be sure of an
extremely unforgettable, unbeatable experience in one of the
most mind-blowingly beautiful places on earth.
Ladakhs rich Buddhist heritage is on display during the annual
monastic festivals at the numerous Gompas that dominate the
area. Perched high up in the mountain ridges, these enchanting
medieval monasteries, surrounded by fluttering prayer flags, are
still places of active worship and hold treasure troves of superb
artifacts, images and ancient frescoes.
The Ladakh Marathon is held in Leh which claims to be the highest
marathon in the world, held at a height of 11,500 to 17,618 feet.
Ladakh Marathon was started in 2012 to show the world that
Ladakh was up and running. The Marathon was also started to
encourage the youth to take up running not only to lead a healthy
lifestyle but also to give them a platform to participate and perform
at a competitive level. Ladakh Marathon is certified by AIMS
(Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) and
has become a prestigious annual event and one of Asias most
important Marathons and a key stop on global marathon calender.

featuring two notable monasteries, a palace, a mosque,
and countless narrow, crooked alleyways beckoning the
curious visitor. To stroll through Leh, taking in its sights,

approaches which makes this airport a scenic airport to
land into and take off from.
- Trip Terminates -
Spend first 2 nights in Leh for acclimatization to high altitude
conditions.
Control your appetite and avoid heavy meal. Have light meals
at frequent breaks.
Water : Dehydration can complicate health issues at such a
high altitude. So make sure you are carrying enough water per
person all the time and drinking at regular intervals.
Medicines : Carry Diamox (helps reduce some of the symptoms
of AMS) and medicines for headache, fever, stomach ache, cold
and cough syrup. It is always helpful if you take the medicine
24 hours before (for AMS) you arrive in Leh more so if you are
flying by air to Ladakh (better if you consult your doctor for
medicine to keep).
Sunscreen lotion : Dont forget to carry a good quality
sunscreen lotion with rating of SPF30 or higher and apply it
properly before going out in the sun.
UV sunglasses : UV rays at high altitude can be quite damaging
and this holds true for eyes as well. So having decent quality
UV sunglasses is quite essential, when mountain passes have a
lot of snow cover and sunlight reflecting from the snow can be
even harsher!
Lip balm : Dry and cold weather of Ladakh will make your lips
dry, so make sure to carry a lip balm or Vaseline.
LIST OF THE THINGS NECESSARY FOR A
HASSLE FREE TRIP TO LADAKH :
Chocolates, biscuits and nuts : These provide instant
energy and easy snack and dont take up too much space.
Mustard oil : Mustard oil can be used for moisturizing
skin, putting it in your hair and for lubricating insides of
nostrils, which can become quite dry and painful due to
dry and cold winds of Ladakh.
Glucose/ORS : As you wont feel hungry as high altitude
slows down your appetite, it is necessary to stay energetic
as you will be travelling throughout the day.
Other personal essentials : Hat/cap for keeping yourself
covered from sunlight, Balaclava, Paper soap, toothbrush,
toothpaste, comb and toilet paper, shaving kit and face
wash if you have the space and need for these and any
other toiletries.
Clothes : Make sure apart from your regular cloths, you
are also carrying a sweater, gloves, cap (protect head and
ears from cold winds), warm inners as temperature in
very variable.
Documents and IDs
Money : Carry enough cash you need, to avoid wasting
time withdrawing cash, it may not be feasible for
everyone. So please keep in mind that ATMs in Leh are
few with often long queues in front of them.
Mobile phone connectivity : Only post-paid connections
from other states work in Ladakh, and only BSNL has
presence beyond Leh, and there will be no connection in
most part of ladakh.
