THE THIRU.V.KA PARK
Thiru V Ka Park in Shenoy Nagar was one of the
major lung spaces in the city, which was established
in 2007.
This space had a tremendous potential to inspire
community interaction and invoked positive
vibration amongst the residents as it had a dense
green cover.
BEFORE THE COMMENCEMENT OF UNDERGROUND METRO RAIL

THE THIRU.V.KA PARK
Unfortunately the park was closed for the purpose of
Underground Metro Rail Construction, in the year 2011.
The construction process ruined half of the park
and almost 130 trees were uprooted.

SITE ANALYSIS
NEIGHBOURHOOD: ROADWAYS: The park is
surrounded by pulla
avenue road, that leads to
the main road called as
EVR road.
SOIL:The site has clay soil.
In clayey and hard rock
areas, rainwater percolates
slowly, but it is held by the
soil for a longer time.
LOCATION: The site is located
in Chennai , Shenoy nagar,
which is situated in the heart of
the city.
CLIMATE: Chennai features
a tropical wet and dry climate.
Chennai lies on the thermal
equator and is also coastal, which
prevents extreme variation in
seasonal temperature.
The site is predominately surrounded
by residential zones

THE PEOPLE’S PRIDE
 It also served as a space for speakers, with THIRU.
VI. KA. SPEAKERS FORUM conducting their
weekly sessions there. The free sessions on public
speaking attracted many more visitors and walkers
to the park.
 The park was proudly known as the
“WALKER’S PARADISE” where the people
gathered around for their daily walks and
pursuits.
Hence, the major queries of the people were, Will the new park have the old
charm? Will it have the green canopy as it had before? Can the new park balance
the concrete environment? Can we get the feel of massiveness from the diminished
park?

WHY TO CREATE LANDSCAPE OF COMMEMORATION WHEN
THERE IS A NEED TO COMMEMORATE THE LANDSCAPE
ITSELF ?
 The park was chosen on two main basis
FOR THE PEOPLE
•TO SATISFY THEIR NEEDS
FOR THE THING THAT
HAPPENED TO THE SITE.
•TO CREATE AWARENESS
To retrieve their WALKER’S PARADISE, lush green
cover and to create vibrant interactive spaces.
The need to commemorate landscape is the
reflection of the human activities due
to the unbalanced development between the
nature and the technologies and the former
mentioned park is a small exemplification
which applies to our contemporary world.

DESIGN EVOLUTION
 There was a need to create a high gradation at the entrance in order to
bring the massive feel of the diminished park and to make the people
curious to explore things behind the gradation.

 There are two major entities
created to depict the
ultimate design motto
which explains” WHERE
DO WE COME FROM AND
WHERE ARE WE
LEADING TO?”
 This entity is largely populated with lush
trees and grass which has quite beneficial
effect of green space on physical and mental
health. Hence these spaces are treated with
seating to bring in the past memories.
 The other entity, which is a vice versa of the
former comprises of Manmade artificial
creations and their waste. This depicts the
present scenario to realize the blunder made
by the mankind.
THE PARADISE THE PURGATORY

DESIGN EVOLUTION
Green Cover Amphitheatre
The elements such as
amphitheatre, play area,
pond are incorporated in
order to enhance the vibrant
spirit of the space.
The Thiru.Vi.ka park was
previously covered with lush
green trees, where people took a
break from the concrete jungle
was destroyed. Considering the
former, indigenous trees such as
Gulmohar,Frangipani,palm trees
are planted .Around these
trees, circular seating are
provided to feel the green canopy
and bring back the identity of
old interacting spaces.
The residents started
to miss the public
sessions and the
cultural activities in
the old Thiru.Vi.Ka
park for which an
amphitheatre is
created at a height
of 3M.

Pond Pathway
A water body is
provided at the
end of the park
,which is at a
depth of 0.6m.
The pathway is
created in a fluid
manner to have
natural walking
experience and to
analyse the entities

CONCLUSION
“ONLY WHEN THE LAST TREE HAS DIED, AND THE LAST
RIVER POISONED, MAN WILL REALIZE THAT HE CANNOT
EAT MONEY.”
