Modeling the way is a leadership behavior where the leader leads by example by doing what they expect others to do. If a leader wants employees to be respectful and on time, the leader must model that behavior themselves by always being respectful and punctual. People naturally imitate those of higher status, so modeling the desired behaviors is an effective way to lead. However, there are limits to modeling - employees will start to rebel if a leader's compensation becomes too far above average compared to others in the organization.

Leadership Behavior: Model the
Way
The leadership behavior , modeling the way, is simply the leader doing
what he or she expects the followers to do. If you expect people to speak
respectfully to each other, speak respectfully to them.
Leadership Tips
"Do as I say, not as I do" doesn't for work with adults any better than it
works with kids. If you expect people to be on time for meetings, as the
leader, always be there a few minutes ahead and begin exactly on time,
every time, no exceptions.
If you aspire to be a leader, look and act like the level of leadership above
you in order to be percieved as "management material."
Why Modeling Works:
The physiology of the human brain causes people to imitate. People of
lower status tend to imitate those of higher status, bosses, celebrities,
parents, mentors,etc.
Limits to modeling:
People believe it is fair for those higher in the organization, with more
responsiblity to earn more and have more. "Fairness" means that the CEO
earns about 40 times the average salary in the organization. This fairness
level has been consistent throughout history.
When leaders earn and live at figures far higher, the rank and file rebel.
The USA was running about 400 times the average salary before the
economic collapse, as were the French and Russian aristocracies before
the revolutions.
