CODYS EXPERIENCE
 Media Arts Center of SD
We made documentaries about neighborhood. (pollution/health/art) (Enabling
Methodology- assumes that individuals have something interesting to say)

Interesting because despite having lived in the community for some time, a lot of us
were learning this for the 鍖rst time.

Sense of knowing the community- in knowing your community- we can be more in
   touch with our identities.

Helped us develop social consciousness in a community where many youth are apolitical
   and educationally underperforming

Crucial for youth; con鍖dence/personal well being/school performace

PHOTOGRAPHY AS A TOOL FOR
UNDERSTANDING YOUTH CONNECTIONS
TO THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD Rudkin and Davis

Paid to do workshops and to photograph their
  neighborhood.
Rated their own photographs on how they depicted their
  neighborhood
Study was about how those scored correlated with the
  criterion measures

Criterion measures = a measure of how connected the
  youth are to their neighborhood

THE ARTS IN THE PRACTICE OF
       COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

 get people involved
 Find out about a community
Change awareness (and relay health ed. messages)
Attract attention to an issue (or changing the way an issue is
  perceived)
 Promote community building

Art is a means by which things are
 made more meaningful; in
 constructing meaning, we facilitate
 learning.

DISCUSSION
How did your self portraits help manifest your agency in
 identity-expression?

How have we seen some of the kids at T&C Learning Center
use art and new media to express themselves better than
 they might with words?

Hascreating visual media helped you personally in developing
a sense of identity and/or belonging within a community? How
 and through what means?

Does whats being created matter? Whats meaningful?
