Whale Rider is a 2002 drama film directed by Niki Caro and based on the novel of the same name by Witi Ihimaera. The film tells the story of Pai, a 12-year-old Maori girl living in New Zealand who wants to become the chief of her tribe, despite the fact that the position is usually reserved for males. The film received international acclaim, winning awards at film festivals in Toronto, Sundance, and Rotterdam. Lead actress Keisha Castle-Hughes received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her breakout role as Pai.
