Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae that primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. It can cause disfiguring skin sores and lesions as well as nerve damage resulting in loss of sensation or paralysis if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment with multidrug therapy can cure leprosy and prevent disability.
