An aquaponics system addresses sustainability issues by using resources more efficiently. It uses less water than traditional farming since the fish wastewater irrigates the plants in a closed-loop system. It also uses less land since fish and plants can be grown together vertically. By growing food in an aquaponics system, it reduces the need for deforestation to use land for traditional agriculture.
