Letitia Geer was born in 1852 in New York. She invented and patented a one-hand operated syringe in 1899 that forms the basis for modern medical syringes. Her patent described a syringe with a cylinder to hold medication, a piston to push it in and out, and a handle within reach of fingers to allow one-handed operation.
