Li-Fi is unlikely to replace Wi-Fi because it requires direct line of sight between the light source and receiver, similarly to infrared technology. This means that devices using Li-Fi would lose their internet connection whenever an obstacle blocks the line of sight, limiting mobility compared to Wi-Fi which can pass through walls and works in any direction. People have come to expect internet access wherever they are without worrying about maintaining a clear line of sight, so Li-Fi would not be seen as an upgrade from Wi-Fi for mobile devices.

- 11. Li-Fi is going to fail for exactly the same reason infrared never went beyond simple office appliance (printer -> PC etc.) communication. Both require direct line of sight (you can't curve light around obstacles unless you use a light pipe like an optical cable and light doesn't go through obstacles). Infrared also had range restrictions and so it was far easier to just use a cable. Radio has 2 things that Lo-Fi will never have - it's omnidirectional (both transmission and receipt) and it passes through most obstacles (depending on transmission power of course).

So anything that's on the move (phones, tablets...) would have to always stay within line of sight of those LEDs to be connected - with how people have embraced the freedom to be connected on the move without having to worry about anything except going too far away from the router it would be impossible to sell something that will limit that freedom as a technological "upgrade".
