Jordan Thomas spent the summer of 2013 living in Ecuador working on a sustainable forestry project with the Kichwa people. The project aimed to identify valuable timber species that could be grown on Kichwa land to provide income alternatives to illegal logging and improve ecological conditions. Thomas surveyed community members, researched tree species, and mapped existing land plots to determine which tree species and locations would be best suited for the reforestation efforts. Some key lessons learned included realizing different views on development between generations, understanding contexts around activities like illegal hunting, and the importance of grassroots initiatives over short-term outside interventions.

This document describes BASTOB's Community Driven Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Process (GDPMEP), a self-monitoring system used in two of its projects. The GDPMEP is a visual tool where community members plan, monitor, and evaluate their own activities. Members set indicators and qualitatively and quantitatively assess progress on a quarterly basis. The process aims to build members' monitoring skills and empower them to take ownership over the project. BASTOB facilitates the process and compiles members' quarterly self-assessments to monitor the program from a partner perspective.
This document discusses the plight of disadvantaged children in Bangladesh. It notes that while Bangladesh has signed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the rights of many children are still not properly protected. Specifically, it focuses on children living in poverty who lack access to healthcare, education and social security. These children often work in difficult conditions, live on the streets, and do not receive proper care, protection or support from society. The document calls for stronger laws, policies and programs to uphold the rights of all children in Bangladesh.
The document discusses the issue of child trafficking in the UK and globally. It states that gangs traffic hundreds of children from Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe into the UK every year to use them as slave labor. The children are smuggled in and put to work in poor conditions where they face physical and sexual abuse. While estimates vary, it is believed that over 1.2 million children globally are trafficked each year, with 35% of all trafficking victims being children. The document calls for stronger national and international measures to prevent child trafficking and protect victims.
The document discusses the issue of child trafficking in three paragraphs. It begins by defining child trafficking according to international law and Bangladeshi law. It then summarizes a newspaper article reporting that gangs traffic hundreds of children from Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe to the UK every year for forced labor and abuse. The victims are immediately put to work in terrible conditions. Finally, the document notes that child trafficking is a global issue requiring international cooperation to prevent abduction, sale, and trafficking of children for any purpose. National and local efforts are also needed along with involvement of non-government groups and society.
The document provides an annual review of activities implemented by the Rural Urban Child Migration Prevention (RUCMP) project from October 2011 to September 2012. The project's objectives were to reduce rural child migration and improve protection of migrant children in project areas by 2013. Key results included forming steering committees in 16 unions and 4 wards, training local government representatives and community members, establishing a child registration system in project areas, and advocating for the system's inclusion in local governance ordinances. Over 30,000 children were reached through community awareness campaigns and over 4,000 migrant children accessed social services with the support of the RUCMP project.

The activities aimed to increase awareness of local governments, communities and other stakeholders on unsafe child migration and the importance of registration systems. Over 10,000 community members participated in the different events. Baseline data was collected and the findings were disseminated. Various awareness raising materials were also developed and utilized.
