This document summarizes a seminar on framing and tagging memories. It discusses how framing can be used to understand motivations and ideologies. Examples are provided of different tags assigned to memories and how these reveal themes like family or spirituality as dominant frames of reference. Students are prompted to ask critical questions about the data, such as how tags are defined and how themes might interconnect. Backing up claims with evidence from the data is also emphasized. The document concludes by offering examples of how to properly cite tagged memories.
3. Questions or Concerns?
? This is a good time to ask me any questions you
may have about course work, software, the process
we are on and so on.
? Please raise your hand and ask the question in the chat
window.
? If you have a mic connected and would like to talk to us all, let
me know!
4. Documenting and Tagging
? (check your computer) How many Macro VS. Micro
tags do you have?
? Please answer in the chat window.
5. Framing
? Can anyone tell me, from this week¡¯s reading, what
framing is?
? Please raise your hand to answer and I will call on you.
Let me know if you have a mic.
6. Framing
? In sociology and communication theory, framing is a
way to better understand and be able to investigate
motivation.
7. Framing
? Introduced by such Communication/Sociology
theory's such as Kenneth Burke and the sociologist
Erving Goffman.
? Using framing analysis, we can understand the
underlining beliefs, ideologies and or ethical frames
used by individuals or groups to help guide action.
? How do you define ideology?
8. Master Frames (our Macro tags)
? Not unlike our Meta
tags, master frames
offer us framework for
the larger influences in
our lives.
? Example -> the dark blue
= our Master frames
(Macro tags) and the light
blue = our minor frames
or micro)

this claim with the
available data ¨C answer
in chat area:

major life changes.¡±
18. Backing up Claims
? Legitimate ways to back
up your claims:
? Discussing or citing how
many times a tag is
mentioned.
? Using your graph to
demonstrate trends
? Using examples from
your data such as
individual pictures,
notes or tweets to show
an example of a trend in
the data.
