Lloyd Klein Couture : brief overview
2. Lloyd Klein
and the
House of
Couture
In his early 20’s,
architecture student Lloyd
Klein inadvertently
discovered his destiny by
attending a Hubert de
Givenchy Haute Couture
presentation in Paris.
As if a switch were flipped,
it dawned on him that
much like the steel and
cement buildings that he
revered, the garments
before him were designed
with the same principals of
structure but with fluidity
and movement only found
in textile.
This exciting personal
revelation, combined with
the artistic drama and the
theatrical energy of the
runway, set him on a
mission to become a
garment architect.
3. With self taught
sewing skills, an
adept hand at
sketching, inherent
style, and an
architectural
understanding of
volume and
proportion, he was
presenting small but
impressive
collections within
two years.
His strength in
suiting design and
his relationships with
master tailors in
small but important
Parisian ateliers,
quickly garnered
him a formidable
private clientele of
discerning
European women
who only collected
the best of Parisian
designers.
4. By 1994, his reputation as an
artist grew and his work was so
directional, that after only three
runway collections, at the age of
25, he was scouted and
appointed as head designer for
the legendary House of
Madame Grès in Paris.
The Grès tradition of draping and
pleating with silk jersey opened
up tremendous opportunity for
the designer to experiment
successfully with new techniques
of integrating draping in his
suiting repertoire, as well as
command him to invest his
senses into what has become a
mastery of elegant evening
gown and dress design.
The juxtaposition of opposites in
Lloyd Klein’s Collections
becomes an evident and
consistently familiar theme.
“masculine fabrics on the
feminine form”, "extravagant yet
subtle”, & "modern and classic“
…..become tandem descriptions
of his work.
5. By 1997, determined to
design under his own name
again he launches a new
Lloyd Klein collection with a
no holds barred tribute to
Salvador Dali on the stage of
the Opera Comique de Paris
where he now assumes the
seasonal role of artistic
director for the prestigious
stage.
However, he has his sights on
the U.S., where he feels that
opportunity not found in the
“old culture” environment of
Paris, is abundant.
His persistence and
commitment to this goal is
soon realized, and in 1999 he
presents his collection to the
influential community of Palm
Beach and his designs are
instantly embraced by an
elite group of American
society women who become
his clientele and confirm his
plan of moving to the U.S.
market.
6. The Spring Summer
2001 collection marks
his first of many New
York Fashion Week
runway presentations.
Although his showroom
is in New York his
design studio is still in
Paris at Place
Vendome. He begins
scouting west for a
home to combine his
design studio, offices
and collection
archives.
In 2004, he chooses a
rare historic baroque
brick castle in Los
Angeles, built in 1928,
that combines his
Parisian sensibility with
the excitement of a
city that embraces
new ideas and has
weather that elevates,
invigorates and inspires
him year-round.
7. The two-story
7,700 sq ft.
flagship provides
Lloyd with an
opportunity to
present an artistic
vision that would
encompass his
signature sense of
decor that is
simultaneously
contemporary
and vintage.
Located in an
historic baroque
castle situated
between the
Hollywood Sign
and Rodeo Drive,
it serves as home
to retail, atelier,
archive library,
offices, showroom
& creative
center, aptly
named the
Lloyd Klein
Couture
Laboratory.
