I am writing this letter in support of Ms. Lori Johnson’s application for the Instructor/Assistant Professor
with Ithaca College, Department of Writing, position number CN000015471.
Ms.Johnson has been employed at Rappahannock Community College (RCC) asa parttime adjunct faculty
member of the English department.
As campus dean and academic dean for the English department, I am her direct supervisor and frequently
interact with Ms. Johnson. She has been employed with the college as an adjunct instructor since the spring
of 2013. She has taught a variety of English classes which include developmental reading/writing, college
composition and literature courses. In addition to teaching on campus, she has taught at severaloff campus
locations, including teaching college English courses in a local high school which supported the college’s
dual enrollment program. She completed a series of online/distance education trainer courses, including the
effective use of our learning management system (blackboard), to qualify as an online and hybrid course
instructor for the RCC. During the spring 2017 semester, she will be teaching in-person and hybrid college
composition and literature courses.
Ms. Johnson works closely with the full time English faculty in her current role, and though not required,
attends most of the departmental meetings, and actively participates in quality assurance/assessment
activities. She is organized, thoughtful and detail oriented. She has consistently demonstrated her
commitment to student success.Ms.Johnson is frequently found meeting with her students outside of class,
tutoring or mentoring students, providing words of encouragement, seeking assistance additional resources
for students, and generally bringing cheer to all those around her.
She has had very good student evaluation. She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to student
success and providing a quality educational experience for her students.
One of the many advantages in working at a smaller college, is that as a dean, I have the opportunity to
work closely with our adjunct faculty. It is why I can say without reservation, that I enthusiastically
recommend Ms. Lori Johnson for Ithaca College’s full time English faculty position. I think you will find
that she is an intelligent and gifted teacher. Her experience in teaching a variety of students, including high
school and non-traditional students through various delivery modalities, would be an asset to the
Department of Writing at Ithaca College. If you should have any questions, please contact me at 804-333-
6771.
Sincerely,
PatriciaMullins
