Valproic acid (VPA) is a commonly used antiepileptic and psychiatric drug. While usually well tolerated, VPA can cause serious hepatotoxicity and hyperammonemic encephalopathy. Carnitine plays an important role in fatty acid metabolism and mitochondrial function. VPA inhibits carnitine biosynthesis and transport, potentially causing carnitine deficiency.
