EXPERIMENT
BY TRINITY ROBINS
MATERIALS
 JAR
LID TO JAR WITH MIDDLE CUT OUT
 WATER
 MESH OR GAUZE
 TOOTHPICKS
 CONTAINERIN CASE OF SPILLAGE
 CARD
WHAT TO DO
1. PUT MESH ON JAR AND SECURE WITH LID.
2. POUR IN THE WATER UNTIL THE JAR IS FULL.
3. PLACE THE CARD ON TOP.
4. TURN THE JAR UPSIDE DOWN CAREFULLY.
5. REMOVE THE CARD SLOWLY.
6. PUSH THE TOOTHPICKS THROUGH THE MESH PAINSTAKINGLY.
7. ADMIRE YOUR HANDIWORK.
8. TIP THE JAR AND WATCH THE WATER RUN OUT.
WHY
THERE ARE ACTUALLY SEVERAL SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES AT PLAY IN THIS AMAZING SCIENCE MAGIC TRICK.
THE FIRST IS ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE (THE PRESSURE EXERTED BY THE SURROUNDING AIR). THIS IS THE FORCE THAT
HOLDS THE CARD IN PLACE UNDER THE JAR. THE SURROUNDING AIR MOLECULES HAVE A GREATER FORCE PUSHING
UPWARDS THAN THE WEIGHT OF THE WATER MOLECULES PUSHING DOWN ON THE CARD.
WHEN WE TAKE AWAY THE CARD, SURFACE TENSION COMES INTO PLAY.
THE SURFACE OF THE WATER BEHAVES AS IF IT HAS A THIN MEMBRANE STRETCHED OVER IT. A FORCE CALLED
COHESION CAUSES THIS. COHESION IS THE ATTRACTION OF SIMILAR MOLECULES TO EACH OTHER. THE
MESH/GAUZE FORMS A LATTICE ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE WATER ENABLING THE WATER MOLECULES TO FORM
STRONG BONDS TO ONE ANOTHER. THIS FORMS A MEMBRANE THAT STOPS THE REST OF THE WATER COMING OUT.
WHEN THE JAR IS TIPPED ON ITS SIDE, AIR MOLECULES ARE ABLE TO BREAK THIS MEMBRANE AND SO THE WATER
COMES OUT.
WHEN WE PUSH THE TOOTHPICK UP INTO THE WATER THROUGH THE MESH/GAUZE, BUOYANCY COMES INTO PLAY.
THE TOOTHPICK FLOATS/RISES TO THE TOP OF THE JAR BECAUSE IT IS MORE BUOYANT THAN THE SURROUNDING
WATER.
