KABPANDAY SA PUTAW:
Maguindanaon
Blacksmithing
By: Norolayn K. Said, MST
Kabpanday sa putaw
(blacksmithing) is
mainly a process of
kapembatak (forging).
It is a process of
shaping malleable
metals by hammering
after the application of
heat.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 2
Papapanday sa putaw (blacksmith)
bought metals from junkshop.
 Then once at his own shop, he works
with the metal using some tools such
as sangga-kala (blower),
lubak/bakbak (hammer),
lubakan/landasan (anvil), sipit
(holder), galugadi (iron file), and sinsil
(chisel).

1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 4
 The metal is
heated with
intense and red
fire produced from
the charcoal air
blown by the
sangga-kala
(blower).
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 5
 With the use of
sipit (holder), the
hot metal is
clamped and laid
on the landasan/
lubakan (anvil).
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 6
 It is then whipped
continuously by a
lubak/bakbak
(hammer). The
heating and
beating may be
done repeatedly
until the desired
thinness is
obtained.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 7
 The metal is carved
with heat application
according to the
desired shape using
sinsil (chisel).
The edges and
blades are
smoothened with
galugadi (iron file).
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 8
 The papapanday
sa putaw is
employing the said
process to make
bulu (bolo),gelat
(knife), gardening
tools, sundang
(sword) and other
bladed weapons
for fighting.

Kabpanday sa Tatunga Basalen
(Making Galvanized-Iron Made
Musical Instruments)
The kulintang, agong,
and gandingan are the
common musical instruments
among the Maguindanaons.
The papapanday sa tatunga
basalen (galvanized iron-
made musical instruments
maker) has skills similar to
that of a blacksmith.1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 10
 The panday used galvanized-
iron (G.I.) sheet as the main
material and other tools such as
sinsil (chisel), bakbak (hammer),
buselan (hard wood guide),
pelampingan sa tatung (rim-
made improvised anvil), ibangulis
(improvised marker), ladtegan
(anvil), galugadi (iron file) and
patli (soldering material).

Kanggapa
 the marking process
 After preparing the
galvanized-iron sheets, the
papapanday used ibangulis
(improvised marker like
compass made of straight
wood with nails) to mark and
design the sheets into circles
or rectangles of different
diameters.1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 12
 Different sheets are
marked to produce the
pakaw/laleb apeg likus
(main body of kulintang,
agong and gandingan)
and the busel
(protruding part).

Busel

Kasinsil
 the cutting process.
 After marking, the
papapanday used
bakbak (hammer),
sinsil (chisel), and
ladtegan (anvil) to cut
the sheets according
to the desired shapes.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 15
Kabpelamping
 the folding process.
 The panday folded the
rough edges of cut
sheets using the bakbak
and the pelampingan sa
tatung (rim-made
improvised anvil).
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 16
Kambusel
 the making of busel (protruding part of
musical instrument where the player beats
to produce sound).
 The papapanday place some small
sheets on the buselan (hard wood guide)
and then whipped it gently with bakbak
until busel is formed.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 17
Kapamatli
 the soldering process.
 The busel,
pakaw/laleb, and the
likus are joined
together, busel to
pakaw and pakaw to
likus by patli
(soldering).
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 18
 Soldering is a
metalworking
process that involves
joining two pieces of
metal together by
bonding them with
solder, a metal with a
lower melting point.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 19
Kabpenggalugadi
 the smoothening process.
 Using the galugadi (iron
file), any left rough surface
is smoothened.
1/10/17 Maguindanaon Blacksmithing 20
Kapagantang-antang
Each part of the musical
instruments is arranged.
The panday then tested
the sounds produced by
each.
If something did not
match the desired pitch,
the panday would repair
it.
