The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ordered the Maharashtra FDA to test samples of packaged drinking water brands like Bisleri, Kinley, and Aquafina for high bromate levels. Bromate is a chemical produced by the ozonisation process used to disinfect water in packaged drinking water plants, and it can cause cancer and other health issues. Testing of bromate levels in packaged water is compulsory for plants according to Indian standards.
