Some folks say, Technologys great! So many new ways to connect people and businesses! Others say, Help! My grandkids are so obsessed with their devices, they rarely talk to me unless I pester them! Drawing on Tims recent Trenton Computer Festival talk on 3D Printing, and new research by Prof. Jean Twenge, this Dialog explores Puzzles to Ponder in both new technology and human relations.
3D Printing is now changing the way we manufacture many objects in amazing ways, from tools, toys, and jewelry, to food, and even body parts! It's a technology revolution happening in new kinds of factories, and even in homes, around the world. But how does it work exactly, and why has the economist, Jeremy Rifkin, called it an important key to the Third Industrial Revolution? This talk explains the basics of 3D printing technology, and what you need to know to begin designing and printing your own creations, with or without your own 3D printer.

Societal Success vs Belief in SupernaturalTim Zebo
油
Is belief in the supernatural necessary for success as a society? When we compare ourselves with other prosperous democracies using 25 measures of success, every 10-unit increase in belief in the supernatural is associated with a 7-unit decrease in societal success. The U.S. is both the most religious and the most dysfunctional of these societies. The correlation between societal success & lack of belief in the supernatural does NOT mean lack of belief leads to success. It does show that societal success does NOT DEPEND on belief in the supernatural. See journal article by paleontologist, Gregory Paul: http://www.epjournal.net/filestore/EP07398441_c.pdf
In 1739, Hume argued that science can help us get *what* we value, but it can't tell us what we *ought* to value. In his new book, The Moral Landscape, Sam Harris says this is now a dangerous illusion. This multi-media talk reviews the arguments pro and con for the birth of a new discipline: The Science of Morality.
Some folks say, Of course, religions good for society it fosters a strong sense of community, feeds the hungry, houses the homeless and promotes the moral education of our children. Others say, Are you kidding? Religion deceives people about the true nature of reality, inspires sectarian violence, teaches dangerous and misleading sex education, and causes endless cultural disputes over abortion, gay marriage and stem cell research - of course, it's bad for society. Drawing on recent social science research by Gregory Paul, and the Plan B Initiative by Lester Brown, this talk suggests a fresh approach to answering this question.

Editor's Notes
#7: Buy Album Cover; Create Locally; Print Locally; Bind Locally No access issues; no wait for delivery issues First test creating a photo album: Thanksgiving 2008. We had lots of out-of-town family visiting for Thanksgiving last year. So after culling out images with poor lighting, focus, etc., I ended up with 171 digital photos to save as memories of special holiday. DigiLabs Page Layout Software The DigiLabs page layout software (Build 3.3.4) offers three ways to make a new album from digital files: Create New Book, Fast Track or Open Saved Book. With 171 photos to import, I picked Fast Track, and was amazed to see a 58-page album automatically designed, and ready for printing and binding, in about 2.5 minutes! Areas for improvement While there is much to like about this kit, the page layout software needs improving so manual operations run faster and smarter: It took only 2.5 minutes to automatically create a 58-page album with 171 pictures. But, it also took 10 secs. to manually move from Page 10 to Page 25! Mysteriously, this simple operation consumed about 95% of CPU cycles during that time! When the Distribute Pictures command inserts pictures into page frames, it does so blindly. Portrait-format pictures are placed into landscape frames, and vice versa. This results in needlessly chopped-off heads and missing left & right image edges. Manual editing is time-consuming because there are no global album commands. A maximize frame sizes command would be a great way to reduce wasted space in Fast Track albums without the tedious page-by-page editing thats now required for this.
