This document discusses remote work, providing reasons for working remotely, realities of remote work, and recommendations for finding remote jobs. I :mustache: you a question.
That's what I send via Slack to folks I'm reaching out to when I'm stuck. Over these first few years of my career, the reach outs are fewer and the problems more specific and/or challenging. Now? I often get that inquiry in a DM. What I'm discovering more and more: That whole rubber duck thing is no jokemoreover, it's often the unofficial mentoring of our industry. What do our own questions teach us? What do they teach others? How can you be a great rubber duck? Beyond that moment, what can the rubber duck do for your career--the easy way?
Inconceivable! Let the Junior Dev Upgrade Rails
There's not much info on the slides. I use the slides to illustrate my talk, rather than making the slides to be my talk. So, yeah. But if you want 'em, here they are.

Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.
Household combustion devices, motor vehicles, industrial facilities and forest fires are common sources of air pollution. Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases and are important sources of morbidity and mortality.
WHO data show that almost all of the global population (99%) breathe air that exceeds WHO guideline limits and contains high levels of pollutants, with low- and middle-income countries suffering from the highest exposures.
Air quality is closely linked to the earths climate and ecosystems globally. Many of the drivers of air pollution (i.e. combustion of fossil fuels) are also sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Policies to reduce air pollution, therefore, offer a win-win strategy for both climate and health, lowering the burden of disease attributable to air pollution, as well as contributing to the near- and long-term mitigation of climate change.

Optimization of Cumulative Energy, Exergy Consumption and Environmental Life ...J. Agricultural Machinery
油
Optimal use of resources, including energy, is one of the most important principles in modern and sustainable agricultural systems. Exergy analysis and life cycle assessment were used to study the efficient use of inputs, energy consumption reduction, and various environmental effects in the corn production system in Lorestan province, Iran. The required data were collected from farmers in Lorestan province using random sampling. The Cobb-Douglas equation and data envelopment analysis were utilized for modeling and optimizing cumulative energy and exergy consumption (CEnC and CExC) and devising strategies to mitigate the environmental impacts of corn production. The Cobb-Douglas equation results revealed that electricity, diesel fuel, and N-fertilizer were the major contributors to CExC in the corn production system. According to the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) results, the average efficiency of all farms in terms of CExC was 94.7% in the CCR model and 97.8% in the BCC model. Furthermore, the results indicated that there was excessive consumption of inputs, particularly potassium and phosphate fertilizers. By adopting more suitable methods based on DEA of efficient farmers, it was possible to save 6.47, 10.42, 7.40, 13.32, 31.29, 3.25, and 6.78% in the exergy consumption of diesel fuel, electricity, machinery, chemical fertilizers, biocides, seeds, and irrigation, respectively.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
油
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying its good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation thats least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state theyre comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
油
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
油
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

油
Here's my presentation on by proven best practices how to manage your work time effectively and how to improve your productivity. It includes practical tips and how to use tools such as Slack, Google Apps, Hubspot, Google Calendar, Gmail and others.
#2: Sometimes, one good animation and/or curse word can get your audiences attention. You just cant over-use them.
It should be noted that I give conference presentations quite often. I am trying to write a slide deck that I would use. I would use this title (but people know what theyre getting with me, and Ive been chosen to keynote at my languages national conference, so I cant be all bad).
#3: Your computer has been hacked.
Or something is horribly wrong.
You dont know what to do.
Thats why this slidedeck (with presenter) is here.
#9: And because its a virus, it then spreads itself to another file in the same computer.
#10: A well-known virus is EternalBlue.
Created by the NSA
Attacks Microsoft systems and makes it possible to install even more malicious software.
Led to worm and trojan cousins.
Theres a fixbut not so much for its cousins.
#11: And thats the thing about what you can do to protect yourself from these things.
Set up auto-update.
The NSA warned folks (Microsoft) this virus had been stolen.
Microsoft released a security patch.
If folks had used that patch, many bad things that used eternalblue to wreak havoc wouldnt have been able to do so.
UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEMS
AUTO-UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEMS
#12: 2. Worms Viruses that use a computer network to replicate.
#13: Like any computer virus, it can delete files on the computer
(NOTE: Using a repeated slide image emphasizes the similarity and repetition)
#14: Worse, it can allow a hacker to remotely control a computer and/or network.
#15: The Anna Kournikova email worm was sent to folks with a link purportedly to a pic of Kournikova.
I. cannot. imagine. why. anyone. clicked. this. (Said with implied sarcastic idiotic tone)
Instead of a pic, the worm emailed everyone in the computer users Outlook contacts
i.e. spreading across networks; it wasnt so horrible; but it caused a lot of traffic on email servers
#16: In addition to updating ones software
And using caution when clicking links (NEVER TRUST ANNA KOURNIKOVA)
A good spam filter on ones email can help keep temptresses like fake Anna Kournikovas from tempting anyone to click on a fake link.
#17: 3. Trojans. A trojan masquerades as a normal program, but secretly, its doing something malicious.
#18: A Distributed Denial of Service attack is when a server is overloaded with activity from a ton of different IP addresses, making it difficult to block and to determine valid server visits from invalid ones.
To carry malicious DDoS attacks out, a Trojan is often distributed among innocuous programs that can then be utilized at specific times to employ a DDoS attack.
In 2016, a DDoS attack targeted web sites hosted by Dyn, which meant a tens of websites went down at specific times on October 21, 2016.
#19: For companies, good firewalls, servers, routers, and switches are key to blocking DDoS attacks,
its in their best interest to educate consumers about Trojans that can allow such things to happen
Consumers should continue keeping their software up to date
Make sure new applications/extensions are scanned before installation
And periodically, with updated software, they should scan their software and registries for potential trojan applications
#20: 4. Spyware secretly spies on on users by collecting info and reporting it to people/places the user doesnt expect/authorize.
#21: Last year, a fake Netflix app was created that used SpyNote RAT, spyware software.
After clicking on the app, installed from a third-party site, the app would seem to disappear, and users would just download Netflix again (hopefully from a more reliable source).
But it really left spyware in place, enabling it to get credit card info and other private data from users.
#22: Hopefully, one is already doing some key things weve discussed:- Keeping OS and software up to date- using a spam filter- scanning email and downloads for viruses- periodically running system scans
But sometimes, one has to delete a specific instance of spyware. In this case, a program like SpyBot can be helpfuland its free. This can allow one to run a scanbut if that doesnt help, there are still more things, like Malwarebytes, that can help delete spyware.
In the end, google can be helpful if used with caution. Once a type of malware is detected, searching google with particular file or website namesor temporary file names that seem suspiciouscan lead to answers. Sometimes, changes to the computer registry are required. Sometimes, one might want to employ a professional. But with care and patience, most sypware can eventually be eradicated.
There is another method that can be of great help that Ill cover in the next section:
#23: 5. RANSOMWARE Locks up your computer until something is given to the people who have your data. Usually money, gift cards, or bitcoin.
#24: Recall the title of this talk: Youre fuckedunless you hand over some bitcoin. Or some other form of currency.
#25: Not long ago, the Cockrell Hill Police Department in Dallas, Texas had one of its servers taken over by ransomware.
They lost some data and did not pay the fines, but their loss was limited, because they followed a key preventative measure.
#26: BACKUP YOUR DATA
The police department had most of its data backed up, and so they didnt need to pay the ransom.
They were able to wipe their servers clean, knowing they could restore the data with their own backup systems.
#27: (NOTE: In a real presentation, I wouldnt use watermarked images--but at least they are attributed this way)
FOR REVIEW: Key ways to keep malware from getting the best of you:1. Keep operating systems and software updated.
2. Use scanning for email, applications, and when opening files (or at least receiving them).
3. Use good spam protection and distrust links in emails, even from seemingly known senders.
4. Use known providers of software.5. Regularly scan systems for malware.
6. BACK UP YOUR SYSTEM REGULARLY. Back up your backups. I use Dropbox for important things, but I also fully backup my system to a hard drive. Other folks use the crowd. Use more than one option.
We will all get SOME sort of malwaretheres even unintentional malwareso we are fucked (or at least doomed), as the title of this talk suggests, but we dont have to be FUBAR, as it were.
