The course's title Man In the Mirror comes from a Michael Jackson song:
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change
It's about the boys themselves, as individuals in their own right and how they interact with themselves and others. MITM using 'clear messages' have them 'take a look at [themselves] and then make a change'.
MITM is not competitive it puts the onus on the boy to be himself for himself, to make the difference for himself. It is having the boy look into his mirror and have some insight as to who he is looking at.
MITM is designed for difficult, on-the-edge-of expulsion, disruptive, distracted, attention-seeking, unruly, lost boys. The course has the boys examining and testing themselves using videos, games, physical exercise, role play, sports.
There are no winners or losers, there is no competition, it is about the individual. This individuality is a key element of MITM as time and time throughout the course the course's purpose is stated and restated 'It's about you'.
The MITM's aim is to have the boys take a look at themselves and how they and their behaviour effects others so, they can understand their own behaviour and its subsequent reactions to their own good rather than the contrary.
MTIM tries to:
have the boys control themselves
give the boys a sense of purpose
let the boys have some fun while they do the above
