The document discusses the manufacturing process of bricks which includes:
1) Preparation of clay by removing loose soil, digging and cleaning the clay, weathering it, and tempering it with ingredients.
2) Moulding the clay into bricks by hand or machine.
3) Drying the bricks for 48 hours to reduce moisture content before burning.
4) Burning the bricks in clamp kilns or permanent kilns like intermittent kilns and continuous kilns such as bull's trench kilns, Hoffman's kilns, or tunnel kilns to make them hard and durable.
3. PREPRATION OF CLAY
REMOVAL OF LOOSE SOIL
The top layer of loose soil about 20 cm depth contains lots of impurities like
vegetation, pebbles and other organic material.
DIGGING , SPREADING AND CLEANING
The earth is then dug from the ground about 50 cm to 150 cm.
WEATHRING OR SEASONING
THE CLAY IS THEN EXPOSED TO ATOMSPHERE FOR SOFTENING
THE PERIOD MAY BE 1 MONTH.
TEMPRING OF CLAY
THE CLAY IS THEN MIXED WITH INGREDIENTS.
5. MOULDING
HAND MOULDING MACHINE MOULD
ï‚—When moulding is done
with hand known as
hand moulding. A
rectangular wooden
mould is use to made a
brick.
ï‚—The clay is placed in the
machine known as
machine moulding. It is
cut to bricks by using
steel wire .
8. DRYING OF BRICKS
ï‚—IT IS ESSENTIAL BEFORE BURNING OF BRICKS.
BECAUSE WET BRICK CONTAINS 7 TO 30 %
MOISTURE SO IN THIS METHOD BRICKS ARE
ALLOWED TO DRY UPTO MOISTURE CONTENT
OF 5 TO 7 %. DRYING OF BRICKS TIME PERIOD IS
48 HRS.
9. BURNING OF BRICKS
ï‚—IT IS VERY IMPORTANT OPERATION TO MAKE THE
BRICKS HARD , DURABLE AND DENCE ETC.
ï‚—WHEN TEMPERATURE DURING THE BURNING
REACHES 650 C THEN WATER IS START TO REMOVED
BUT THE BURNING PROCESS IS NOT COMPELETED
AT THIS STAGE. THE FINAL TEMPERATURE WILL BE
FOR PROPER BURNING OF BRICK 1100 C.
10. BURNING OF BRICKS
CLAMP KILN
ï‚—THESE ARE THE
TEMPORARY
STRUCTURES USED
FOR THE BURNING OF
BRICKS ON A SMALL
QUANTITY TO FILL
THE LOCAL DEMAND.
ï‚—THESE ARE
PERMANENT
STRUCTURES
DESIGNED MORE
SCIENTIFICALLY TO
BURN THE BRICKS ON
LARGE QUANTITY.
12. KILNS
INTERMITTENT KILN CONTINUOUS KILN
ï‚—IN THIS KILNS THE
OPERATION OF BURNING
OF BRICKS IS NOT
CONTINUOUS.
ï‚—STAGES ARE LOADING ,
FIRING , COOLING AND
UNLOADING.
ï‚—IN THIS KILN THE
OPERATION OF BURNING
OF BRICKS ARE
CONTINUOUS. SO
LOADING , PREHEATING ,
BURNING , COOLING AND
UNLOADING ARE
CARRIED OUT
CONTINUOSLY.
