#8: By the time chn get to the national tests in year 6 they need to have a repertoire of strategies, including written methods so they can look at a calculation and decide on the best way of doing it. Ask themselves ¨C ¡°Can I do any of this in my head? What do I need to jot down? What¡¯s the best method for tackling this? E.g. remember 103-98 ¨C small answer because numbers are close together ¨C count on. 3003 ¨C 2998 , same type of subtraction so do it same way. Demo the number line. But 3004 ¨C 1847, could do mentally ¨C demo. on number line, but could begin to be at the limit for some children of what they are comfortable with mentally so perhaps best with a more formal method. This is the point at which teachers use their professional judgements to move children on to more formal methods.
