On Mardi Gras, Christians would eat rich foods like crepes and cakes before fasting during Lent. Carnaval is related to Mardi Gras and comes from the Italian phrase "carne vale" meaning goodbye to flesh, as it is also celebrated on the day before Ash Wednesday with costumes, makeup and food.
