This document provides background information on the Maria Hertogh riots that occurred in Singapore in 1950. It discusses:
1) Maria Hertogh was born in Java in 1937 to a Dutch father and Indonesian mother. During World War II, she was adopted by a Malay woman, Che Aminah, and raised Muslim in Kemaman, Terengganu.

binti Maaruf was born in
Java, March 1937.
5. Marias father: Adrianus Petrus Hertogh
married with Adeline Hunter.
- He served as a sergeant for Royal
Netherlands East Indies Army.
- He get caught by the Japanese army.
Adeline hardly survive as a single mother to
five small children.
Adelines friend, Che Aminah help her by
adopting Maria and brings her to Kemaman,
Terengganu.

This is a permanent adoption
- Marias adoption was witnessed by
Adelines elder brother, Soewaldi
Hunter.
- No written document was made to show
the consent from Adeline.
7. Maria was raised by Che Aminah with Muslim
and Malay cultures.
One day, a British officer, Sir Arthur Locke pay
a visit to one school in Kemaman.
In one of the school event, Sir Arthur had met
Maria. He started to investigate her.
Che Aminah was called upon before the Court.
She was unable to ascertain Natrah status as
her legal foster child.
8. - On the 1st trial, Che Aminah had lose the
case. She was unable to prove that Maria
is her legal adopted child.
- The court had ordered her to return back
Maria to her biological parents.
- She was allowed to make an appeal to
British Supreme Court.
9. On the 2nd trial, Che Aminah had succeed
to claim for the custody upon Maria.
To secure the custody, Che Aminah had
arranged a marriage between Maria (15)
and Mansoor Adabi (22).
Mansoor Adabi was a training teacher at
that time.
