Skills4Stem is an agency that encourages young people to pursue apprenticeships, such as their Project Attraction program which matches talented youth with construction apprenticeships. This case highlights Marissa Francis, who struggled to find an engineering role after her BTEC until Skills4Stem matched her with a 5-year air conditioning and electrical engineering apprenticeship at Westway Services. Both Marissa and Westway have found the arrangement beneficial, with Marissa gaining valuable experience and Westway praising her focus and contributions. Skills4Stem is pleased they could facilitate the successful matching of Marissa's skills and enthusiasm with Westway's program through Project Attraction.

1. Skills4Stem Project Attraction – a Story of Success
Skills4Stem is a skills, talent and training agency that is passionate about encouraging
more young people to take advantage of apprenticeships. Skills4stem have developed
Project Attraction, a programme that focuses on matching young, talented people with
apprenticeship schemes within the Construction Industry to enable the industry to grow,
innovate and evolve. This approach focuses on engaging 16-21yr olds within community
projects to encourage and assist them in applying for apprenticeship schemes within the
Construction Industry.
One recent Project Attraction success story involves Marissa Francis and the
apprenticeship scheme run by Westway Services Limited.
After successfully completing a mechanical engineering BTEC in 2010, Marissa Francis
had initially struggled to find the role in Engineering that was right for her. Skills4Stem
worked closely with Marissa as part of Project Attraction, to identify her requirements,
together with her skills and capabilities, and matched her to the highly successful Air
Conditioning and Electrical Engineer Apprenticeship run by Westway Services, a
Mechanical and Electrical service provider. This is a five-year programme that finally
provided Marissa with the opportunity to develop her engineering career.
This arrangement has been a massive hit on both sides.
Marissa has been a great addition to the programme for Westway, as their HR Manager,
Karen Stubbings, explains:
'Westway were thrilled to have the opportunity to workwith Skills4Stem to help find us
a female apprentice who wanted the opportunity to work in the Electrical and Air
Conditioning Industry. Marissa is very focused and determined to succeed; we are very
fortunate to have met and appointed her. She is making a valued contribution to the site
she is currently assigned to and learning a vast amount from our experienced on-site
engineers. Marissa will start her College course in September 2014 and be assigned a
Westway ' Mentor' to assist her with any challenges she may have along the way. Our
Engineering team like nothing more than to impart their knowledge and expertise to our
2. Apprentice team and Marissa will only benefit from this. We pride ourselves in the
achievements of our appointed Apprentices, three of which are now fully fledged
engineers whohave joined our reactive mobile team out in the field.'
Marissa said; ‘I’m really grateful to Skills4Stem for finding me my apprenticeship with
Westway.I’ve lovedevery minute, it’s been a great learning experience and has given me
the opportunity to work with a wonderful Engineering Team. I can’t wait to start my
college courseas part of the scheme in September, I’m so happy to havethis opportunity.’
Sarah Davis, Managing Directorat Skills4Stem, said; ‘We are thrilled to have been able to
match Marissa and Westway as part of Project Attraction. Marissa’s existing experience,
enthusiasm and motivation meant she was an ideal candidate for the excellent
apprenticeship programme with Westway. We are really pleased the scheme is working
out so well for both parties. ProjectAttraction continues to work with young people and
our Talent4Stem team are involved withschools, further education colleges, universities
